What is a well-woman health check?

A well-woman health check-up is a preventive appointment that looks at several aspects of your health in one visit, rather than waiting for a specific symptom to prompt a test. At London Pregnancy Clinic it is led by a consultant gynaecologist, who brings together your consultation, scan, examination and a broad blood screen in a single appointment. The aim is to give you a clear, joined-up picture of your health and to pick up anything that may benefit from earlier attention.

Screening is valuable precisely because many common conditions can be present without obvious symptoms. Cervical screening is a good example: nearly all cases of cervical cancer are linked to high-risk types of the human papillomavirus (HPV), and according to Cancer Research UK regular screening helps prevent cervical cancer and saves thousands of lives every year in the UK.

Sexual health is similar, as most people who have chlamydia notice no symptoms at all, which is why testing matters even when you feel well.

A well-woman check is designed to complement, not replace, the NHS cervical screening programme, which invites women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64 for screening at regular intervals. You can also explore our wider gynaecology services to see how this package sits alongside our other women's health appointments.

Is this package for me?

For every woman wanting a comprehensive insight into various female health risk factors.

What is included in this package?

This package concentrates on specific health needs of women. It includes:

Haemoglobin; Thyroid profile; Cholesterol profile; Vitamin D; Ferritin levels; Glucose

  • A consultation with a consultant gynaecologist with pre-pregnancy advice, including gynaecology ultrasound scanning
  • Arrangement for prescription and onward referral if required
  • Blood test screening for the following:
  • Full family history taking and pelvic examination
  • Blood pressure assessment
  • Cervical smear (PAP test), and HPV testing
  • Sexual health review
  • Swab tests for sexually transmitted infections

What do the blood tests check for?

The blood panel in this package is chosen with women's health in mind, and your consultant gynaecologist interprets each result in the context of your history and examination. Haemoglobin and ferritin together give a picture of your iron stores. Iron-deficiency anaemia is common, and the NHS notes that heavy periods are a very common cause; it can leave you tired, breathless or run down, so it is worth identifying.

The thyroid profile checks how well your thyroid gland is working. An underactive thyroid is a common condition that is diagnosed with a blood test — and, because thyroid problems are more common in women, it is a sensible part of a general health screen. Your cholesterol profile and glucose add an insight into your heart and metabolic health, which can otherwise go unnoticed.

Vitamin D supports healthy bones, teeth and muscles, and levels commonly dip over the darker months; the NHS advises that adults consider a 10-microgram daily supplement in autumn and winter. Seeing these results together, alongside your scan and examination, allows your consultant to explain what looks well and what, if anything, may benefit from a closer look.

What happens at a well-woman check appointment

1

Consultation and history

You begin with an unhurried consultation with your consultant gynaecologist, who reviews your personal and family history, your current health and any concerns you would like to focus on, including any pre-pregnancy plans.

2

Examination and scan

Your consultant carries out a pelvic examination and a gynaecology ultrasound scan, and checks your blood pressure. This is a good moment to ask questions about anything you have noticed.

3

Cervical screening and swabs

Where appropriate, a cervical smear (PAP test) with HPV testing is taken, along with swab tests for sexually transmitted infections as part of a wider sexual health review.

4

Blood tests and results

Blood samples are taken to complete your panel, and your results are talked through at a short follow-up consultation — see 'How will I get my results?' below.

How will I get my results?

You will receive your ultrasound report shortly after your appointment via our secure cloud system. The bloods are processed by our partner laboratory TDL here in London and can take 2-7 days to be processed.

Following the receipt of the results, we will arrange a 10 minute Zoom/telephone consultation to interpret the results and discuss the following actions.

We are also happy to send the results to your GP and arrange any further referrals as appropriate.

Further steps

If the check-up results in any concerns regarding your health, we will arrange a referral letter explaining our findings and diagnosis to your GP. We are also able to refer you to a private hospital or specialist of your choice or recommend a trusted expert from our wide network of colleagues in the field.

A note on your results and next steps

A well-woman health check is designed to inform and reassure, not to replace ongoing care from your own GP. This information is intended for general educational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice; please consult a qualified healthcare professional for guidance specific to your individual circumstances. If a result needs acting on, your consultant will explain the options and can arrange onward referral to your GP, a private hospital or a specialist of your choice.

Who is the well-woman health check-up for?

The Well Woman Health Check-Up is for any woman wanting a comprehensive insight into various female health risk factors. It suits those who have specific health concerns they would like to follow up, as well as anyone seeking a general health screen and pre-pregnancy advice.

Because the package is delivered by a consultant gynaecologist, it is a good option if you would value expert interpretation of your results alongside your scan and blood tests. You can see our other women's health services on our gynaecology page.

Who performs the well-woman health check-up?

Your check-up is carried out by a consultant gynaecologist, who leads the consultation, performs the gynaecology ultrasound scan and pelvic examination, and reviews your family history. Having a consultant involved throughout means your results are interpreted in the context of your individual health.

The consultant can also arrange a prescription or an onward referral if required, and provide pre-pregnancy advice as part of the same appointment. Any concerns identified can be explained in a referral letter to your GP or a specialist of your choice.

How often should you have a well-woman health check?

There is no single rule that fits everyone. How often you might choose to have a well-woman health check depends on your age, your health history and your personal circumstances, so it is best discussed with a qualified healthcare professional. Many women use a broad check periodically to keep an eye on aspects of health that can change over time.

It works alongside, not instead of, routine NHS screening. For example, NHS cervical screening is offered to women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64 at set intervals, and a private well-woman check can complement that programme.

What is the difference between a well-woman check and a smear test?

A smear test, now called cervical screening, is one specific test that checks the health of your cervix and looks for high-risk HPV. A Well Woman Health Check-Up is broader: it brings together a consultant gynaecologist consultation, a gynaecology ultrasound scan, a pelvic examination and a full panel of blood tests in a single appointment.

Cervical screening can be included as part of the check, so the smear is one component of a wider women's health review rather than a separate alternative. If you mainly need a pelvic ultrasound, you can also read about our pelvic scan.

Does a well-woman health check include a smear test?

Yes. A smear test — a cervical smear (PAP test) together with HPV testing — is included in the Well Woman Health Check-Up where it is appropriate for you. According to Cancer Research UK, nearly all cases of cervical cancer are linked to high-risk HPV, which is why screening is a valuable part of a preventive check.

Your consultant gynaecologist takes the sample during your pelvic examination and explains your results, along with any recommended follow-up, at your results consultation. If you only need STI testing rather than the full package, see our separate sexual health check-up.

How do I prepare for a well-woman health check?

No special preparation is usually needed. It can help to have a few details to hand, such as the dates of your menstrual cycle, any medications or supplements you take, and your family medical history, as your consultant will ask about these.

It is also worth noting down any symptoms or questions you would like to raise, so nothing is forgotten on the day. If you would like advice on timing your appointment around your cycle, our team is happy to help when you book your appointment.

At what age should you have a well-woman health check?

There is no fixed age at which well-woman checks should begin. Some women book one in their twenties or thirties as a baseline or as part of pre-pregnancy planning, while others find their forties and fifties a natural point to take stock as their health needs change. The right timing depends on your history and circumstances, so it is worth discussing with a qualified healthcare professional.

NHS programmes offer useful anchors: invitations for NHS cervical screening begin at age 25, and the NHS Health Check is offered every five years between the ages of 40 and 74. A private well-woman check can sit alongside these at any age, bringing your scan, examination and blood test results together in one consultant-led appointment.
