In short
Is the Harmony test still available? The quick answer
No. The Harmony test has been discontinued in the UK. Its laboratory, TDL, withdrew it in September 2023, so it is no longer offered here or elsewhere in the UK.
The good news is that NIPT has moved on considerably. At the London Pregnancy Clinic we now offer a menu of modern tests that screen for the same core conditions Harmony was popular for — Down's syndrome (trisomy 21), Edwards' syndrome (trisomy 18) and Patau's syndrome (trisomy 13), plus fetal sex — with comparable or better performance.
Every NIPT we offer includes an ultrasound scan and a specialist review of your results, with prices starting at £490. If you want a like-for-like replacement, Panorama, Unity and PrenatalSAFE are the closest modern equivalents.
- Basic replacement (trisomies plus sex chromosomes): Unity from £490 or PrenatalSAFE from £540
- Closest SNP-based equivalent, available earliest (from 9 weeks): Panorama from £590
- Every option includes your ultrasound scan and a specialist review
- Advanced replacement (adds microdeletions): Extended Panorama £790 or PrenatalSAFE Complete Plus £1,490
Choosing a replacement
Why Harmony was popular — and what to look for now
Harmony (developed by Ariosa and later run under Roche) was, for around a decade, the go-to NIPT for many UK clinicians. It was valued for reliable screening of the three common trisomies and its London-based laboratory. In its later years, however, the test relied on ageing technology and had a relatively high failure ('no-call') rate, which contributed to its withdrawal. You can read the full background on our Harmony test page.

Yesterday's news
Harmony NIPT: our experience with the test
Harmony was one of the first NIPTs offered widely in the UK, including in many NHS hospitals, and for years its name was almost a byword for NIPT. It was developed by Ariosa Diagnostics, later part of Roche, and TDL provided it in the UK from 2013 until it withdrew the test in September 2023.
We offered Harmony for many years, so our view comes from first-hand experience. As the test's equipment aged, more of the samples we sent to TDL came back with no result (a 'no-call') because of laboratory quality-control problems. We first raised this with TDL in 2021: every repeat blood test meant more waiting and more worry for parents.
That is why we started looking for better options long before Harmony was withdrawn. We were one of the first UK clinics to offer Invitae's advanced NIPT in 2021, and we review each laboratory's clinical performance data before we offer any test. TDL has since moved to Illumina VeriSeq technology, which we now offer as TDL VeriSeq V2.
One thing has not changed: NIPT screens only your baby's chromosomes. It cannot see structural (physical) anomalies, which make up around two-thirds of fetal abnormalities, so every NIPT we offer comes with an ultrasound scan.

The alternatives in detail
Modern NIPT alternatives to the Harmony test
Here is a closer look at each replacement. Follow the links for full details, or see our complete NIPT comparison.
Panorama — from £590
The closest SNP-based alternative to Harmony, developed by Natera. Available from 9 weeks — earlier than any other NIPT — and screens the three common trisomies plus triploidy, with optional 22q11.2 (DiGeorge) and Turner syndrome. See Panorama.
Unity NIPT — from £490
A cost-effective modern replacement screening for Down's, Edwards' and Patau's syndromes plus the sex chromosomes, from 10 weeks. Our lowest-priced NIPT. See Unity NIPT.
Unity Complete — £990
Adds carrier screening for up to 14 inherited conditions — including cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy and sickle cell disease — to the standard Unity panel. See Unity Complete.
PrenatalSAFE — from £540
A straightforward trisomy screen with UK-based analysis and a fast turnaround, from 10 weeks — a close like-for-like Harmony replacement. See PrenatalSAFE.
PrenatalSAFE Complete Plus — £1,490
Our most advanced, genome-wide panel — one of Europe's most extensive NIPTs — screening for a broad range of rare chromosomal and genetic conditions. See PrenatalSAFE Complete Plus.
Extended Panorama — £790
Panorama with an added microdeletion panel, including 22q11.2 (DiGeorge), for parents who want screening beyond the common trisomies. See Extended Panorama.
What changes, what stays the same
Switching from Harmony to a modern NIPT
The process is essentially the same as it was with Harmony: a simple maternal blood sample, taken after an ultrasound scan that confirms your dates and checks your baby. What changes is largely the turnaround time and the breadth of what can be screened.
Turnaround depends on the test you choose. UK-analysed tests such as PrenatalSAFE typically return results in around 2–4 working days, while Panorama is analysed in the United States and usually takes 7–10 working days. Our team will confirm timescales when you book.
Whichever test you choose, the essentials stay the same: an ultrasound scan is always included, your results are reviewed by a specialist, and any high-chance result is discussed with you and confirmed with a diagnostic test such as CVS or amniocentesis. If you would like to talk through your options first, we offer genetic counselling.
Harmony test alternatives — your questions answered
Why was the Harmony test discontinued?
The Harmony test was withdrawn because its UK laboratory, The Doctor's Laboratory (TDL), discontinued it in September 2023. In its later years the test relied on ageing technology and had a relatively high failure ('no-call') rate compared with newer platforms. TDL has since moved to Illumina-based NIPT technology. You can read the full background on our Harmony test page.
That Illumina-based replacement is TDL VeriSeq V2 — run by the same London laboratory that used to provide Harmony, which makes it the closest thing to a direct successor. It screens for the same three trisomies Harmony was known for — Down's (T21), Edwards' (T18) and Patau's (T13), with optional fetal sex — and reports in 2–4 working days, at £540 including your ultrasound scan.
What is the closest test to the Harmony test?
For a like-for-like replacement, PrenatalSAFE and Unity screen the same core conditions Harmony was popular for and are analysed in the UK. Panorama is the closest SNP-based equivalent and can be performed from 9 weeks. Which is best depends on how early you want to test and whether you want extended screening — our team can help you decide.
Is Panorama better than Harmony?
Panorama and Harmony use different laboratory methods; Panorama is a SNP-based test developed by Natera. Because Harmony has been discontinued, a direct comparison is now largely academic, but Panorama offers a very low false-positive rate for the common trisomies, screens for triploidy, and can be performed from 9 weeks. Like any NIPT, it is a screening test rather than a diagnosis. See Panorama for details.
Can I still get a Harmony test in the UK?
No. The Harmony test is no longer available in the UK following its discontinuation by TDL in September 2023. Clinics that previously offered it now use alternative NIPT platforms. At the London Pregnancy Clinic you can choose from several modern alternatives — see our NIPT options.
Do the alternatives screen for the same conditions as Harmony?
Yes — and often more. All our NIPT alternatives screen for the three common trisomies (Down's, Edwards' and Patau's syndromes) and can determine fetal sex. Extended options such as Extended Panorama add microdeletions like 22q11.2 (DiGeorge), while Unity Complete adds carrier screening for up to 14 inherited conditions.
How much do the Harmony test alternatives cost?
Our modern NIPT ranges from £490 to £1,490, and every price includes your ultrasound scan and a specialist review. See the full NIPT price list for a breakdown, or compare tests in our NIPT comparison guide.
Is NIPT available on the NHS instead?
The NHS offers NIPT only to people whose combined screening test shows a higher chance of Down's, Edwards' or Patau's syndrome. Choosing NIPT privately means you can have it from 9–10 weeks without waiting for an initial screening result, with a detailed ultrasound included. We still recommend continuing with your routine NHS antenatal care. Read more about NIPT.
I’m not based in London — can I just do the NIPT without a scan?
Not through London Pregnancy Clinic — every NIPT we offer includes an expert ultrasound scan. The scan confirms your pregnancy is viable, dates it accurately and checks it is suitable for testing, which is why we do not offer the blood test on its own.
If you cannot get to our London clinic, our partner Jeen Health offers NIPT across the UK. You will need to provide proof of a pregnancy scan taken within the last 7 days before your blood sample is taken.
A note on this information
This page is general information about alternatives to the discontinued Harmony test and is not a substitute for personalised medical advice. NIPT is a screening test, not a diagnosis. Which test is right for you depends on your individual circumstances — please speak to our clinicians, or ask about genetic counselling, before making a decision. If you have concerns about your pregnancy or your baby's wellbeing, contact your midwife, GP or maternity unit promptly.
